What Are The Different Types Of Pool Filter?

Can’t decide on which pool filter type to use for your pool? We’ll cover three common types of filters you may have come across.

As well as their individual advantages and disadvantages.

We’ll also let you know which filters we think are the most suitable for private pool use. Stick around and find out!

Cartridge Filters

If your pool is using these filters, you are most likely being shortchanged. They are not suitable for pool usage due to the frequent need for washing.

The washing process itself is very laborious as one must take out the filter in entirety and wash the individual elements inside thoroughly.

If you do have these filters, the pool maintenance price will be higher than typical rates. These filters are generally more suitable for water features since they can be submerged in the water.

Sand Filters

Sand filters are the preferred filter because they offer a good balance of result (i.e., clear water) and ease of maintenance.

The filtration capabilities are adequate, and the components can be washed easily. Hence, these types of filters are easy to maintain. Furthermore, they do not generally cause issues such as leaking filtration media into the pool.

One obvious downside is sand filters can be very bulky and heavy but if one has space to spare, a sand filter would be first choice.

Other than for pools, these filters are very good for water features too.

DE Filters

DE filters are like racing cars. When everything is at optimum level, they give the best and clearest water clarity. This is because they use DE powder which is a very fine media to filter the water.

However, it is not easy to get the balance right, and any leaks will cause the pool to suffer in terms of debris and clarity.

DE powder can be dangerous too. In its dry form, it is a hazard to lungs if breathed in. Because of this, you may want to avoid DE filters for private pool usage.

Conclusion

Of the three types of pool filters described in this article, we recommend sand filters for private pool use.

If water clarity is your main priority, you might also want to consider DE filters if you have professionals to maintain your pool for you.
